Samaritans Kenya was registered in 2004 as a company limited by guarantee. It is modeled on the World wide Samaritans founded by Dr Chad Varah in London, UK in 1953. Samaritans or Befrienders as the service is called in some countries has since opened up many branches providing a listening service and emotional support to those in distress, despair and feeling suicidal. Upon formation, Samaritans Kenya actively made contacts with the International Samaritans and Befrienders family including the UK and South Africa. A team from Kenya attended the annual conference of Befrienders South Africa where they received their first encounter with other members of the Samaritans and Befrienders family and had an opportunity to share the South African experience through discussions and visits to their local centers. In April 2005 one of the founder members and a Director also had the opportunity to visit Samaritans headquarters offices in Ewell, U.K and she also visited the Samaritans Manchester Branch. Samaritans Kenya is now established and is officially recognized by Befrienders Worldwide as a member of the Samaritans and Befrienders family. |

Samaritans Kenya are a Group of Volunteers.... |

Befrienders Worldwide has recently been officially registered as a charity Organization separate from Samaritans.
According to the Befrienders Africa Regional Coordinator, Mrs. Merab Mulindi this step is a milestone especially for the Befrienders in her Region.
In a mail to the Befrienders centers in Africa she said, “ their is still a lot of work to be done and therefore I call upon all of you to join hands and work as a team.”
Merab requested the members to make an effort and respond to mails so as to develop a culture of sharing information, in order to be updated on what other centers in the region were doing. |
